Why this CEO actually supports the 5-day workweek

Why this CEO actually supports the 5-day workweekWhy this CEO actually supports the 5-day workweekHow do CEOs and top executives spend their time effectively at work and off work?Thirty-hour work weeks and three-day weekends are trending lately, supposedly boosting productivity and satisfaction. Im sure theres some merit to the idea. But honestly, I cant even think about that without getting a little anxious.Personally, I dont even have enough time to get through everything I need to in five days as a co-founder and CEO. Thats why I generally spend nine hours in the office each day, and then hop online later at night once my kids are asleep.Leading a company doesnt come with a lot of wiggle room for laid-back work weeks. But no matter how busy it gets, there are some things CEOs should always make time for.1. Holding one-on-one meetingsIn my mind, theres nothing more important than holding one-on-ones.Each senior leader who reports to me is managing a specific area of our business, an d everything the company does flows through their teams. If they dont feel like they have the answers, or if a problem is slowing them down, then nothing gets accomplished.Generally, each weekly one-on-one meeting runs about 30 minutes. Some may go longer, but this is usually enough time if youre holding them consistently.I recommend never going into these meetings with any kind of personal agenda. Let your direct report set the intent. Everyone is different- some focus on tactics and some on strategy. But the most important thing is having that time with your direct reports to talk about their team, their projects, what theyre struggling with, and how you can help.One-on-ones are also the best opportunities to give and receive feedback. It can be difficult to get into the habit of sharing feedback, but having time every week tends to make it easier. Once you begin giving and soliciting feedback with someone, the conversation really opens up.And thats what you really want to make ti me for - honest communication that moves the team forward and keeps everyone on the same page.2. Engaging with the pressI recently spoke with a reporter who was writing an article on the influence of shape versus size in todays clothing companies. We initially ran into a scheduling conflict, but I didnt brush it off. Instead, I moved things around on my calendar to make sure I had the time to speak with her. Reporters work on tight deadlines, and requests often happen last-minute.Its critical that you make time for any form of press when you can, for two very important reasons For one, press is free. All your other marketing initiatives are generally expensive because youre creating content and paying money to place it somewhere. The nice thing about speaking with the media is that its an excellent way to get your name out there without a large investment.Second, if youre a consumer brand like we are at ThirdLove, building your reputation is a huge part of your success. The more pe ople see your brand, the better. Doing interviews and answering questions about your company is crucial, because it provides you with another opportunity to reach potential customers. What youll find is, the more press you get, the more press you get. Its a positive cycle wherein the more people talk about you, the more you become an object worthy of writing or talking about. Its difficult to create that cycle on your own, so dont discount the power of press when the opportunity comes your way.3. Developing your people the ones who matter mostThe success or failure of your business always comes back to your people. Your culture, organization, and strategy all come down to the happiness and motivation of the people working in your office. You have to remember that everyone, at every moment in time, is growing and developing. And part of the CEOs responsibility is to help facilitate that development and provide people with opportunities to learn and mature. For instance, our team is curr ently working on our company process for updates. Essentially, we plan to have a different team present at each monthly company update meeting, so each has a chance to showcase what their team is working on.Ive been spending so much time on it because I think its important for everyone in the company to have an understanding of what other people do- and how difficult and time-consuming their jobs can actually be. That exposure creates more empathy and respect throughout the company. Its also an opportunity for people to work on public speaking and presenting. They get an opportunity to show people what they do, but they also develop as individuals. It doesnt matter who you are or what your company does, you have to put people first.Your days will always be hectic and fast-paced, but its up to you as a leader to create time for the things that matter most. This article was originally published on Quora.com.Heidi Zak is theCo-Founder and Co-CEO of ThirdLove.

A Beginners Guide to a Product Management Career - The Muse

A Beginner’s Guide to a Product Management Career - The Muse A Beginner’s Guide to a Product Management Career I remember the first college class I ever took where I actually read the assigned readings each week simply because I was interested in what I was learning. Up until then I had become a professional skimmer and was convinced I would never find the right major. That class was human-centered design, and it is what I consider the start of my career in product management. I just found the intersection between solving problems with technology and how people actually use that technology so absolutely fascinating. You may’ve just learned about product management as well and are wondering, “Could that field be right for me?” Or, maybe you’ve been thinking about it for a while and still aren't sure exactly what it would entail. While most product managers are more than happy to talk to someone interested in the field to help get a better sense of the job, there are things that you can do on your own first to answer some of your questions. So, in an alternate universe, if I was trying to figure out if I wanted to pursue this professionally, here are the three things I would tell myself to do right now. 1. Read These Books Product management’s gained popularity over the last 10 or so years thanks to great product companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google. But just because it’s new doesn’t mean there isn’t loads of great content already out there! These three books in particular are each relatively quick reads and they cover the fundamental concepts. The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman This book is really more about design and usability than strict product management. It is what started me thinking about everything in life as a product! It’ll make you realize that every single decision that goes into making even basic things like a door or a chair has trade-offs. And those trade-offs affect how people will (or will not) use what you make. You will know immediately if thinking about designing things for people is something you have a passion for or not. Inspired: How to Create Products Customers Love by Marty Cagan This is one of the few books that truly answers the question, “What the heck does a product manager actually do all day?” Marty Cagan is one of the godfathers of product, and in this he breaks down all of the responsibilities of the role and gives great real-world advice on how to effectively accomplish each of them. The Innovator’s Dilemma by Clayton Christensen In product, and business in general, you’ll often hear references to the concepts from this book, so you may think that you know the ideas well enough. You don’t. You need to read this book yourself to really appreciate the concepts. Noted product management author, Ken Norton described it in his famous Books for Product Managers blog post as, “The most important book of the past fifty years. If you’re a technology PM and you haven’t read Christenson, do so right now.” I listened to him and he was right. 2. Bookmark These Blogs Now and Read All Past Posts (But Really) There are millions of product and tech blogs out there that are good, but one of the first things you will need to learn as a PM is how to prioritize. So, if you had to pick only a few ways to get your information each week, these would be my picks. Marty Cagan’s Blog If his name sounds familiar, it’s because we just spoke about him a few paragraphs ago. If you’re trying to get into this industry, you’ll need to know how to do things like define product principles and create a roadmap. Cagan will tell you how to do these things. The good thing for you is that while a lot of people currently in the field may have more experience than you, they still do these things wrong. So, learning about them from someone like him will at least let you start on the right foot without any bringing any bad habits along. Ken Norton's Blog Yes, this name again! Norton’s most famous for teaching us to “always bring the donuts.” He has years of experience in product, most notably at Google, and now as a partner of Google Ventures. Some of his most famous posts include What To Do in your First 30 Days as a PM (I followed these rules in my first 30 days at The Muse and it served me well), How to Work with Software Engineers, and How to Hire a Product Manager. You can subscribe to his weekly newsletter to get good insight into the similar problems all product managers face. TechCrunch OK, so you don’t need to read all past posts for this one- that would not be a good use of your time. But being a product manager in the digital world is going to require being aware of what’s going on in the industry, whether that’s new technologies being released, recent funding rounds or acquisitions, or just insights into new products across different sectors. There are loads of blogs you can use to get this information (like Hacker News, Gizmodo, and so on), so it doesn’t only need to be TechCrunch. But pick your favorites and get into the habit of consuming this information daily. ProductHunt The amount of awesome products out there is inspiring! ProductHunt will introduce you to new ones each day that you can learn from, and even potentially use to make your life easier. 3. Start Thinking in a Product Mindset for Everything You Do Every Day At this point, if the field still interests you, welcome! You’re about to enter a weird world that is awesome and exciting, where your work is never complete and your users problems will never be 100% solved. You’ll soon realize the way you think about everything you use in your life will change. Have you ever tried to purchase something on your phone and you almost threw your phone across the room out of frustration while trying to complete the purchase form? Well guess what- a product manager was responsible for pushing that live (with the help of an engineering and design team) and there are a million reasons why it could’ve been created that way. Maybe they couldn’t come to an agreement across internal departments on which fields to cut from the form and now the user (and company’s conversion numbers) has to pay for it. Maybe they didn’t properly prioritize the importance of building a responsive form because they didn’t understand what percent of their users use the site on mobile. Maybe they did and you were in the minority, so the mobile features were purposefully deprioritized! No doubt, if you’re being interviewed by a somewhat decent company, in the first or second round you will get questions like, “What is your favorite product to use?” and “How would you improve that product?” So do yourself a favor now and start thinking in this mindset all day, every day. When you use something that was so easy that you didn’t think about it, take a moment to appreciate that! And think about how hard it probably was for that product team to deliver something so beautifully simple. Starting to view your world with this mindset will help you start thinking like a product manager before you land your very frist job. Within the world of product management, there are many different directions you can choose to go in. Your experience will vary depending on the types of products you work on and the types of companies you work with. But no matter what, these three first steps should help you figure out if this career is right for you and hopefully ignite your passion for it! And if it’s already ignited, check out these open product management positions now.

Hardware-Led Social Innovations Highlighted at ISHOW India

Hardware-Led Social Innovations Highlighted at ISHOW India Hardware-Led Social Innovations Highlighted at ISHOW India Hardware-Led Social Innovations Highlighted at ISHOW India Russell Collins of Himalayan Rocket Stove pitches the Eco1 Rocket Stove to the judges at ISHOW India. Eight teams of inventors and entrepreneurs presented their hardware-led, socially beneficial inventions recently at the ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) India. At the end of daylong event, which was held April 4 in Bengaluru, India, the creators of a clean-burning heating and cooking stove, a hand-held digital stethoscope, and a machine for reeling silk yarn using the suns rays were named the three grand-prize winners of the competition. Each of the winning teams received a share of $30,000 in seed grants and technical support to help commercialize their products. The three winning teams were selected by a panel of judges that included representatives from Villgro, Henkel Adhesives Technologies India, Ankur Capital, Osteo3d, and Myelin Foundry. One of the three winning prototypes, Eco1 Rocket Stove, is a clean-burning, high-efficiency combustion stove for heating and cooking in the Himalayas where wood is in short supply due to deforestation. The stove, which was invented by Himalayan Rocket Stove, requires less wood than traditional wood combustion stoves, thereby addressing the deforestation problem in the Himalayas as well as the inconvenience of fuel collection. (Left to right) Madhukar Sharma of ASME’s India Office, Gopi Katragadda from Myelin Foundry, Arvind Badrinarayanan and Sumukh Mysore of MUSE Diagnostics, and James Creel, senior program manager with ASME’s Engineering for Global Development program. The second grand-prize winner at ISHOW India, the TAAL Digital Stethoscope from MUSE Diagnostics, is a small, hand-held device that uses innovative technology to produce clear, noise-free body sounds. The accompanying software app allows users to visualize, record, analyze and share these results, while their cloud platform gives users diagnostic suggestions and enables specialist referral. The third winning entry, Unnati Solar Silk, is a solar-powered machine for reeling Tassar silk yarn, which grows in the forested areas of East India. Invented for use in some of the poorest and most remote parts of the country, where access to electricity is extremely limited, Unnati increases efficiency in reeling silk and improves quality of life, particularly for the rural women who are primarily responsible for this work. The extraordinary solutions put forward by todays winners will undoubtedly allow us collectively to do more, and do better, said Said Jahanmir, president of ASME. Their display of creativity and ingenuity fully captures the spirit of ASMEs ISHOW and exemplifies engineering problem-solving that improves lives. Members of Team Resham Sutra demonstrate for the ISHOW judges how their Unnati Solar Silk Reeling Machine operates. Along with the three grand-prize winners, a special fan favorite award was presented to the team that received the most votes in a social media survey. That $1,000 prize went to the company Tallshortree of Bengaluru for its entry, B-Hue Indias first inexpensive, non-invasive hemoglobin tester to help detect cases of anemia, one of the major health problems facing children and adults in India. ASME congratulates and thanks all our winners and finalists for serving as catalysts of progress and social good, Jahanmir added. By constantly seeking to innovate and disrupt the status quo, they are making a measurable difference for people around the world today and for generations to come. Two more ASME ISHOWs are scheduled to take place during the next few months. ISHOW Kenya will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, on May 9. It will be followed by ISHOW USA in Washington D.C. on June 13. This is how to resist distraction 4 proven secrets

This is how to resist distraction 4 proven secrets This is how to resist distraction 4 proven secrets Have you said any of these recently?I get distracted and procrastinate. I make plans but I don’t follow through on them. I get things done… but not the right things. The problem often  comes down to just one word: “reactive.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Maybe that wasn’t the word you were expecting. But reactivity is  a problem people have been contemplating for thousands of years. And, yes, it’s a bigger issue now than ever. What is it? What can we do about it? Neuroscience and ancient wisdom from Buddhism and Stoicism have  answers.Let’s get to it…Your Reactive  BrainMaybe you’re lazy, maybe you’re not lazy. But one thing is for certain: your  brain is.Research shows that even in our free time we often don’t do what we enjoy most - we do what is easy. Your brain doesn’t want to waste energy. So it’s always a bit lazy.Problem is, the world is not lazy. These days it’s constantly shouting at you.Sometimes it’s the siren song of entertaining things like text messa ges from friends and other times it’s scary things like work emails - but it’s shouting.Everything is demanding our attention. We’d like to make a plan and follow through or accomplish goals undistracted but the world  seems to be working against you. When I spoke to Duke professor Dan Ariely, he said exactly that: the world is working against you.  Here’s Dan:The world is not acting in our long-term benefit. Imagine you walk down the street and every store is trying to get your money right now; in your pocket you have a phone and every app wants to control your attention right now. Most of the entities in our lives really want us to make mistakes in their favor. So the world is making things very, very difficult. Your lazy brain is happy to just react to that relentless bombardment of stimuli coming its way.  But when you  just react, you  don’t usually make the best choices. And while you’re  definitely doing something, you’re  rarely achieving your goals. That’s because when you’re reacting, you’re not in control of your life. In fact, reacting is the opposite of control. You see something fun and you chase it. You see something scary and you run away. Either way, your environment is determining your behavior. It’s ironic that we so often say to others, “Don’t tell me what to do!” And yet, all too often, we’re letting the world around us determine our actions. We’re not starting from plans and decisions, we’re reacting. And these days we’re often sitting there hoping we get a new text,  email, update or notification. We’re all but saying, “Please, tell me what to do.”And while technology has made the problem worse, this issue  has been around forever. About 20 00 years ago the Stoic philosopher Epictetus said this:If a person gave away your body to some passerby, you’d be furious. Yet, you hand over your mind to anyone who comes along, so they may abuse you, leaving it disturbed and troubled - have you no shame in that?(To learn the 7 step morning ritual that will keep you happy all day, click here.)More often we need to step back rather than dive in. But how do we do that? First, we need to prepare…Control Your ContextBrian Wansink is a professor at Cornell who studies eating behavior. And one of the main things he’s found about overeating is that it’s rarely due to hunger. It’s usually due to context. From  Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think:Everyone - every single one of us - eats how much we eat largely because of what’s around us.You  eat less when food is farther away and more when it’s closer. Here’s Brian:People ate half as much if we simply moved the candy dish off their desk and  placed it six feet away.So when you need to get work done, put your phone on the other side of the room. Make distractions harder to reach. When you have fewer things to react to or you make it harder to react to them, you’ll be less reactive.(To learn the 4 rituals neuroscience says will make you happy, click here.)Preparation is great but that’s just the first line of defense. What do you  need to do when you’re face to face with something that’s pulling you into reactive mode?Stay CalmTake a pause. Something fun is saying “Come play with me!” Or something scary is in front of you and you want to run away and procrastinate. So just pause for a second.  As Marcus Aurelius said a long time ago:The first thing to do - don’t get worked up… The next thing to do - consider carefully the task at hand for what it is, while remembering your purpose is to be a good human being. And modern science agrees. All that emotion is not going to help.  Albert Bernstein, a clinical psychiatrist, says st aying calm is key to making good decisions in the heat of the moment:…the basic idea is that in many situations, you’re reacting with instincts programmed into your dinosaur brain, rather than thinking through a situation. If you’re in your dinosaur brain, you’re going to play out a 6 million-year-old program, and nothing good  is going to happen.Neuroscientists  say stress takes your prefrontal cortex - the rational part of your brain - “offline.” Quite simply, stress makes you stupid. And that’s why just reacting often makes you do stupid things.(To learn how astronauts, Samurai, and Navy SEALs stay calm and make good decisions, click here.)Okay, you paused. But you can’t just freeze every time something tempting comes up. So what’s next?Think About Your GoalsMake sure the most important thing stays  the most important thing.Even the ancient Stoics knew that.  Epictetus said:First tell yourself what kind of person you want to be, then do what you have to do. Fo r in nearly every pursuit we see this to be the case. Those in athletic pursuit first choose the sport they want, and then do that work. Not big on Stoicism?  The ancient Buddhist practice of mindfulness is on the same page. Joseph Goldstein, one of the leading experts in the field, told me something very similar:Where is this action leading? Do I want to go there? …This thought which has arisen, is it helpful? Is it serving me or others in some way or is it not? Is it just playing out perhaps old conditions of fear or judgment or things that are not very helpful for ourselves or others? And modern neuroscience research  agrees with both.Thinking about your long-term goals when you’re tempted by distraction gives your brain a sense of control and can release dopamine which will make you feel better and more motivated.Alex Korb, a neuroscientist at UCLA, told me this:By thinking, “Okay, what is my long-term goal? What am I trying to accomplish?” Calling that to mind can actuall y make it feel rewarding to be doing homework instead of going to the party because then your brain is like, “Oh yeah. I’m working towards that goal. I’m accomplishing something that’s meaningful to me.” Then that can start to release dopamine in the nucleus accumbens and that can start to make you feel better about what you’re doing.(To learn more about  the six rituals that ancient wisdom says can make you happy, click here.)You’re calm and you’re thinking about your goals. Now comes the hard part…Make A Deliberate  DecisionTurning down fun distractions  is hard. Resisting the urge to procrastinate is really hard.So  take a second and deliberately  decide not to give in. I know,  that sounds waaaaay too easy to be helpful…Wrong.  Neuroscience shows pausing and  taking the time to make a  decision actually helps stop you from engaging in bad behavior.Via The Upward Spiral:Making decisions also helps overcome striatum activity, which usually pulls you toward nega tive impulses and routines. And then, finally, act on that decision. Follow your long-term goals. Here’s neuroscientist Alex Korb:When the prefrontal cortex is taken offline  by stress we end up doing things that are immediately pleasurable.  Instead of getting overwhelmed, ask yourself, “What’s one little thing that I could do now that would move me toward this goal I’m trying to accomplish?”Taking one small step toward it can make it start to feel more manageable.(To learn more about the neuroscience behind mindfulness, click here.)Okay, we’ve learned a lot. Let’s round it up and see what happens when we put it into action…Sum UpHere’s how to resist distraction and be less reactive: Control your context: You can’t react to what’s not there. Stay calm: Stress makes you dumb. Stress and reacting leads to dumb behavior. Think about your goals: Get Stoicism, mindfulness and dopamine on your side. Make a  deliberate decision: When you do, your brain is better  able to resist no-no’s. You don’t have to react and answer that text immediately. You don’t have to react to that delicious smell and eat all the cookies. You can pause, stay calm, think about your goals and decide to do the right thing. We’re all so afraid of being bored that we run to any distraction that presents itself. But when we truly engage with the world and focus on our goals, we’re never bored. And as David Foster Wallace said, “If you are immune to boredom, there is literally nothing you cannot accomplish.”Join over 271,000 readers.  Get a free weekly update via email  here. This article first appeared on Barking Up the Wrong Tree.

You may have had a boss who is autocratic, or you may be an autocratic boss yourself. And just like any leadership style, autocratic leadership has pros and cons. What is Autocratic Leadership? As the name suggests- it’s a very self-styled leadership. The leader doesn’t take input from others and makes all the decisions, which is quite the opposite of democratic leadership or servant leadership. An autocratic leader will usually: Accept little or no input from group membersMake almost all of the decisionsDictate all work methods and processesMake all decisions and do most of the important tasksWork in a highly structured and rigid mannerDiscourage creativity and out-of-the-box thinkingClearly outline and communicate rulesEmphasize the importance of following rules There are times when autocratic leadership can be considered an advantage, and there are times when its considered a disadvantage. Pros Encourages strict adherence to regulatory protocols Provides structure and stability for employees Maintains clarity on company vision and mission Cons Fosters low employee engagement and satisfaction Leads to potential micro-management of employees Discourages new ideas that could benefit a company The Pros of Autocratic Leadership If you’re running a business, or a department, that needs to follow strict protocols- either because of government regulations or business needs- an autocratic leadership style can make sense. For example, call centers often have strict protocols that employees must follow. These protocols don’t allow room for a lot of creativity or out-of-the-box thinking on the part of the employees. The manager dictates the rules and the employees follow them. Autocratic leaders can also find success in areas with strict regulatory protocols. You may identify a better way to do the work, but the government simply won’t allow it. Leaders don’t gain advantages by listening to and considering new ideas from other people. Perhaps, though, one of the most significant benefits of autocratic leadership comes when the leader has a clear vision and is brilliant enough to be right. Many people identify Steve Jobs and Martha Stewart as famously successful autocratic leaders. Jobs and Stewart both knew what they wanted and set out to achieve it, and if you didn’t get in line, you didn’t last long. Similarly, Walt Disney had his dream, and he set out to follow it, to great success. All three had brilliant ideas and brilliantly implemented their ideas. If they had had more mediocre ideas, they would have benefited from a more democratic leadership style. The Cons of Autocratic Leadership Starting with Jobs, Stewart, and Disney, though, you can see that there are some problems when only one idea person exists. Jobs was fired from his own company (although he did come back to run the company again- successfully). Stewart landed in prison. Walt Disney had his brother, Roy Disney, who Walt could not fire, keeping him towing the financial line. Many people dont enjoy working for a boss who just tells you what to do and how to do it. So, unless the autocratic leader is genuinely brilliant and has a sparkling personality, people who are autocratic leaders may have difficulty encouraging employee engagement. It’s also easy for an autocratic leader to slip into micro-management. While they can seem synonymous, they are not. An autocratic leader generally wants his or her ideas implemented, but doesn’t have to stand over you and dictate every small detail like a micro-manager would. A micro-manager can also elicit ideas from staff and have an unstructured workplace but controls parts of the work to an extreme level. If You’re an Autocratic  Leader If you like being in charge and have a grand vision that you want others to implement, you may be an autocratic leader. What you need is someone to check- a Roy to your Walt. If you’re a middle manager, this person is often your boss. If you’re the owner or CEO, having a board to whom you listen is helpful. What you need is clear feedback that you listen to- otherwise, you may find yourself failing. When you hire, look for people who are happy to carry out your ideas. If you search for highly creative-out-of-the-box thinkers, you’ll end up with an unhappy staff. On the other hand, if you tend toward democratic or servant leadership, don’t hire people who want to do their job and go home without any thought about coming up with new ideas. They won’t be happy under your leadership either. Regardless of your methods, make sure you look at employee happiness, productivity, and company success. If you’re doing poorly in any area, you are the one who needs to change. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

3 Reasons to Say Yes to a Work Challenge - The Muse

3 Reasons to Say Yes to a Work Challenge - The Muse 3 Reasons to Say Yes to a Work Challenge Recently I was asked to lead a project that would have a positive impact on not just my team, but on other teams across my company. Because I have a hard time turning things down at work, I accepted the challenge without a second thought. But there was one catch: I’d never led a project like this before. And frankly, it’d been a long time since I led a group of people toward a shared goal- and the last time I tried, it didn’t go particularly well. I struggled throughout and as we made our way through the process, I thought I’d made a mistake in accepting the challenge. I kept thinking it would have been better for everyone if I had said, “Maybe next time.” But then a funny thing happened- the project got done and I became an authority on something I previously knew nothing about. Even though it’s easy to believe you’ll fail when you say yes to doing something new, it’s just as easy to believe in yourself. (OK, almost as easy.) If you need encouragement in the right direction, here are a few things I learned from taking a leap and saying “yes.” 1. You’ll Find Out That You Were More Qualified Than You Realized Here’s the thing: Unless your boss is trying to get herself fired, she’s also under a lot of pressure to get things done. She has goals she has to hit and she can’t do it herself. As tempting as it would be to assume that she’s given you this assignment because there’s nobody else to do it, the truth is that your manager wouldn’t have trusted you with it if she didn’t actually think you could get it done. I know that your impostor syndrome is making you say, “You’re not up for this and you don’t know anything.” But here’s the thing- the only person telling you that you’re unqualified is you. After all, your boss asked you because she thinks the exact opposite. It took me a few days to realize this, but when I did, I knew that the only person who was skeptical of my abilities was me. 2. You’ll Learn That Asking for Help Really Doesn’t Make You Look Dumb The natural conclusion to taking an assignment you’re unfamiliar with is to keep all your questions to yourself. You want to prove that you can crush it, so you take it upon yourself to find every relevant resource out there that’ll help you become a subject matter expert in no time. But what I ended up learning is that approach can actually make you look less qualified than simply asking for help. It’s OK you don’t have all the answers. Your boss probably knows that’s the case. But he also trusts you to figure out the right people you should be leaning on for help. So don’t rely too heavily on your own skills (or Google), especially since you know you’re lacking some of the necessary experience to get this task done- and done well. 3. You’ll Realize It’s OK That the End Result’s Not Perfect In terms of the project I was leading, I didn’t maintain the process we established at the onset perfectly. At times, I ran around like a madman because I had no idea how to resolve certain issues. And ultimately, while we completed it, there were plenty of things I wished had gone differently. But the good news for me? Most of my “I wish I’d done this differently” thoughts didn’t matter to the end product. I turned in what was asked, even if it wasn’t exactly what I would’ve liked to submit. In the likely scenario that your final result isn’t exactly what you hoped it would be, focus more on the lessons you’ve learned throughout the experience. Were there breakdowns in communication that you can resolve for the next time? Were there knowledge gaps that you currently have the answers to for future attempts? Even if the project wasn’t executed perfectly, you’ll learn plenty of valuable lessons from the experience. In my case, I learned so much about a completely new area of the company’s business that I’ve now become the subject matter expert on it. Hey, I get it. It’s easy for me to sit behind my computer and tell you to accept more assignments at work, even if your previous experience would suggest that you’ll fall on your face. But I’m a total scaredy cat about new challenges. And not only did the project get done, I learned a few things that will impact the rest of my career. So, if someone like me can survive this harrowing experience, I’m totally confident that you can too.
